The workholding method changes the whole setup
Rotary selection starts where the tool touches the work. Rollers support a blank at contact points and let its outside surface drive the rotation. A chuck grips the blank with jaws or a fixture and rotates it from that connection. Neither method is universally more accurate: geometry, setup, pressure, alignment, machine motion, and operator process determine the result.

Choose a roller when outside support is reliable
A roller is usually the simplest path for a cylindrical blank with a clean contact surface. It is especially useful when operators change among common drinkware sizes and need the blank to be easy to load. A dual-tower platform can add adjustment across the roller bed; a focused single-tower or manual system can be enough for a narrower drinkware mix.
Choose a chuck when positive grip solves the real problem
A chuck can control work that does not sit naturally on rollers, but gripping creates its own questions. Confirm how the jaws contact the part, whether a delicate surface needs protection, how the part is centered, and whether the machine supports the required mounting and motor. Do not clamp fragile work by trial and error.
Choose a mixed workflow when one method forces compromises
A shop engraving tumblers all morning and rings or specialty cylinders later may benefit from separate roller and chuck stations. That is a hybrid production strategy even if the mechanisms are not in one chassis. The advantage is choosing the correct workholding for each job; the tradeoff is maintaining separate profiles, training, and changeover standards.

- Decide whether the outside surface can drive rotation without walking or slipping.
- Measure the full rotary-plus-blank envelope inside the laser.
- Confirm the controller, connector, motor configuration, and software path.
